Greensmith, Sendyne, ARPA-E, and the Road to Better Battery Management
The Department of Energy’s ARPA-E program recently put out a RFI for new technologies to help solve a problem: managing today’s advanced battery energy storage systems. This article outlines some of the startups working on a solution to what ARPA-E notes as complicated challenge, but with potentially game-changing results.

At the Wall Street Journal’s Eco:nomics conference on Thursday night, Bill Gates expressed his view on the need for “energy miracles,” or break through innovation, in at least five areas, and in each of these areas “we need at least two hundred crazy people who think their idea alone can solve this.” Though not as easy as the IT revolution, said Gates, energy miracles are fundamental breakthroughs in science and engineering.

Last June the US military unveiled an Operational Energy Strategy which called for a greater energy efficiency in military operations. Now the Department of Defense (DOD) is implementing a plan for the energy strategy, complete with specific targets and goals for energy efficiency and renewable energy strategies across the military.
